VR Movie, “Miyubi” is an Innovation in Storytelling

Through the help of production studios, Felix & Paul Studios and Funny or Die, the Facebook-owned VR company, Oculus had just produced its own movie. And a trailer had just been released this week.

Entitled, “Miyubi”, it is said to be a “full length” VR film, which, by the industry’s definition, is only a good 40 minutes. But of course, the experience is new; it is quite a challenge to wear the VR gear for such a long duration. Last January’s VR experience which featured former President Barrack Obama bidding the White House farewell only ran for 8 minutes.

Despite not adhering to the conventions of “full length” Hollywood films, “Miyubi” employed actual actors acting out a real script. The movie follows a top-tier home robot living with an American family in 1982. Given the nature of VR, the actors’ faces are in close proximity to yours as they, at times, look at you directly.

Co-founder of Felix and Paul Studios, Felix Lajeunesse, expressed just how much he was enthralled with the production, saying that it is both a challenge and a beautiful endeavor. He recognized that integrating the audience into the movie itself is an innovation in storytelling.

Miyubi is now available for Gear VR and Oculus Rift.
