The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Kangkong dominated the University of the Philippine’s Gaming Guild’s (UPGG’s) “Impetus 2017”. Held from the 24th to the 25th of June, “Impetus” is the first-ever intercollegiate DOTA 2 competition in the country overseered by a student organization.

The TNC High Grounds Cafe in Tomas Morato was the venue for the event.

Representatives for the finals for each school were determined through a series of qualifying tournaments that were held in the 8 UAAP schools.

The UP Diliman Impetoinks had an advantage over the DLSU THe Fellowship. However their prowess ran short after the early and midgame when the DLSU’s Medusa hero extended the match, stretching it further from the usual 40-minute face-offs.

impetusBut after the grueling 104 minutes, UPD emerged victorious.

It was after the lower bracket that the UPD lost its luster to ADMU due to an emergency substitution. This led to ADMU’s triumph, bringing them to face UST in a Best of 5 series.

While struggling for domination in the second game, UST proved its efficacy throughout the game against ADMU.

The Katipunan-based team went with a solid lineup in Game 3 with the likes of Rubick, Razor, Tusk, Lone Druid, and Ember Spirit. They went head-to-head against their equals, Clockwerk, Batrider, Jakiro, Invoker, and Weaver.

They maybe the oldest university in the country, but UST’s youthful exuberance and competitiveness garnered them a total of Php25,000 upon winning the first prize.

Congratulations UST! And we’re all hoping that esports will garner greater recognition in the Philippines in the near future.
