The Sequel to “Split” To Be Released in 2019, Culminates The Trilogy That Started With “Unbreakable”
Oh how the tides have turned for M. Night Shyamalan. The once praised director had indeed gone down a spiraling path of questionable creative decisions that didn’t sit well with fans (yeah, we’re looking at you “The Last Airbender”). But with the positive reviews that his James McAvoy-starrer had received, Shyamalan seems to have sprung back into critical favor.
2016’s “Split” made waves with an impressive storyline and an equally-impressive performance from McAvoy. The director had come back to his element; he had effectively played around with the facets of the genre so as to keep the audiences fully-engrossed and constantly speculating of the film’s highly-unpredictable outcome. The story follows one Kevin Wendell Crumb whose mind is fractured into 23 different personalities, with the last one being an animalistic entity loosely referred to as, “The Beast”.
Shyamalan disclosed that the Kevin character was originally written in his 2000 offering, the superhero thriller, “Unbreakable” but decided to have him written-off for a more focused storyline.
By the end of “Split” we are treated to a scene at a local diner where Bruce Willis’ David Dunn is seen sitting, listening to a news report about the horrific acts done by Kevin Crumb as he is dominated by the persona of “The Beast”. In a report, Shyamalan revealed that “Unbreakable” and “Split” are actually the first two episodes of a trilogy which would culminate with the yet-to-be released thriller entitled, “Glass”.
Confirmed just recently, “Glass” would be released on January 18th 2019 under Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. Shyamalan took to Twitter to tease of his most recent effort:
Okay. Here we go. Finished the new script.

It’s taken 17 years but I can finally answer the #1 question I get, “Are you making a f#&@ing sequel to Unbreakable or what?”

My new film is the sequel to #Unbreakable AND #Split. It was always my dream to have both films collide in this third film.

After the release of “Split”, the director had reported that actor James McAvoy had already agreed to star in a possible sequel and had in fact expressed great excitement in the project.
