Mr. Gustavo Zampieri Lago: An Artist Who Knows What He Wants

by Joshua Diokno

More often than not, we hear people say that artists are fickle-minded–that they easily jump from one desire to another without plan or foresight. Of course, these are mere stereotypes; these are opinions of people who do not understand the inner workings of an artist’s mind.

One such artist exemplar of rising above the misconception is Mr. Gustavo Zampieri Lago. He knows exactly what he wants and does every effort possible to achieve it. Mr. Lago knew early on that he was bound to creativity and is not shy to admit it. And his works over at ArtStation is a testament that this is not just a claim, it is fact.

So let’s get to know this artist’s journey to become good in the craft through this interview by Xeno Creatives and be inspired.

Xeno Creatives (XC): Given your experience in the industry, what do you think is your edge as a 3D artist?

Gustavo Zampieri Lago (GZL): Creativity has always been my skill; I’m really proud of it. But being creative is not actually something really unique although I have been such since I was really young. I think I owe it to all the years of my life absorbing visual information from movies, games, illustrations, and works of art alongside my academic formation in graphic design passion for drawing. I can say that these days, I have managed to raise my creativity to a much better level. I believe I already have a mastery of my observation skills and also have a critical and practical look on the things that I create.

XC: Before concentrating on ZBrush as a primary tool of 3D creation, what other software did you use?

GZL: ZBrush was in fact my first interaction with the 3D world. Before that, I have always used Adobe software like Photoshop and Illustrator for both artistic and professional purposes (Graphic Design). I also used some traditional media as oil painting, pencils, and do a little bit of sculpture, that, in a way, traditional 3D, haha.

XC: What made you turn to ZBrush? What about it appealed to you?

GZL: My original passion has always been digital painting/drawing. But these have always frustrated me in a way, since I always had to worry about many technical characteristics from the beginning of the process such as lighting, perspective, etc. These have have blocked my creative process in a certain way. When I started using ZBrush, I got fascinated because I was able to focus directly on the form and design without parallel worries. I was able to express myself much more quickly and efficiently.

XC: So far, what were the challenges that you had encountered working in the 3D industry?

GZL: As know-how has always been on the artistic side, and my entry into the world of 3D was by ZBrush. What frightened me in a way about was the amount of theoretical load it needs to be able to make a finished model (in real-time), diverse techniques, and diverse software. It was really overwhelming to start studying all these, but it’s all under control now (I think haha!)

XC: What is your most exciting project to date?

GZL: I can’t say specifically right now because I normally work on several projects at the same time (that’s the way my brain works haha). However, what I’m more excited about is finishing a project in real-time, which had become a milestone for my development as a 3D artist.

XC: What other concepts do you want to create through ZBrush?

GZL: My own concepts, hahaha! As much as I’m trying to follow the path of a character artist, and learning technical stuff and various software, what I really crave is to be a concept artist. My true passion is to create characters from the most different types and forms. I want them all to have impeccable quality. To do this, I have keep learning, hahaha!

XC: Do you have any advice to aspiring artists?

GZL: If your dream is to be an artist of any kind, (character, concept 3D, illustrator, etc.) just go ahead! Do not make excuses or think of problems that you may have. Take a leap of faith; work hard and never give up. It can take 1 to 10 years, but if this is really your dream, you will have keep pushing it. And if at any moment you feel bad or discouraged, think that there may be only one project more for you to cross this barrier to ultimately achieve your dream. Accept criticism and value all the compliments–this will give you tons of energy to continue on your path!

Thank you very much for your time Mr. Gustavo Zampieri Lago! We truly value the words which you had imparted.
