A Mini-Armageddon: PlayStation 3 Ceases Production In Japan

PS3-slim-consoleJapan had reached an end of an era. Sony had finally decided to put a stop on production and sale of PlayStation 3 units in Japan.

But does this mean that the console will eventually see its apparent demise in the world market? The answer may not be that simple.

While this stoppage in production in Japan does signal significant change in the market, it is a fact that other countries receive hardware later than others. What this would mean is that there might still be demand elsewhere, especially when we are looking at countries in the west and other, possibly other technologically-challenged territories. One such instance of this is the four-year delay launch of PS3 in Brazil. The console only made it to the country in 2010 when it had already been making waves in Japan and North America since 2006.

The likes of “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves”, “Journey”, “LittleBigPlanet”, and “The Last of Us” amde it possible for PS3 to have a following despite its high retail price and challenges in development.

Back in 2009, Sony released a revitalized versions of the console which featured a slimmer body. Three years later, it was succeeded by what was called the “Super Slim” edition. Come 2013, the device was readily replaced by PlayStation 4.

Noteworthy however is PS3’s reported sales of over 84 Million unit during its tenure in the market, pitting it in a close fight against its competitor, the Xbox 360.

How about you, do you think that production of PS3 will eventually meet its end in the west?

Clock’s ticking, and we all know that all good things will eventually come to an end.
