A Milestone: Hideo Kojima’s “Metal Gear” Franchise Hits 30
Created by game dev genius, Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear is a series of action-adventure stealth video games. The game was published by Konami. The widely-popular and critically-acclaimed game saw the light of day back in July 13th 1987. Since then, it had seen numerous iterations and instalments.
Released for MSX Home Computer Architecture in 1987, the first game in the series took its players into the experience wherein they control a special forces. A player can either assume either Solid Snake or Big Boss. Whomever they choose, the character is tasked to find the super weapon named, you guessed it, “Metal Gear”. It is a bipedal walking tank that has the capability of launching nuclear weapons.
Numerous sequels have been released for various consoles. These iterations saw Snake’s support team grow into numerous interesting characters and plots.
Metal Gear boasted of cinematic cutscenes, tight-knit and sophisticated storylines, breaking of the proscenium and political and philosophical discourses.
Apart from its success of being able to sell over 41.2 Million copies internationally, Metal Gear had been adapted into other media including comics, novels, and drama CDs.
The lead, Snake, had even appeared as a guest in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
