From General Zod to Cable? Michael Shannon Main Candidate to Play X-Men Mutant in “Deadpool 2”
It seems that American actor and musician Michael Shannon, currently known for portraying the cruel and torturous General Zod in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” would be switching to another comic book cinematic universe, 20th Century Fox.
Home to the X-Men franchise, the casting team for 20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool 2” had recently disclosed that Shannon is in the running to play Cable for the film.
He is a frontrunner in fact, thus overtaking other speculated casting choices such as Pierce Brosnan and, in an attempt to gender-bending, Keira Knightley. However, confirmation has yet to be made regarding the role. Suffice it to say, both the studio and actor had not reached any agreement surrounding the project.
Nathan Christopher Charles Summers, or more popularly known as Cable, is son to Scott Summers and Madelyn Pryor, clone of the telepath, Jean Grey.
Following Jean Grey’s death, Mr. Sinister created a clone for her after discovering that a union between her and Scott would result into a powerful mutant. This, Sinister wanted to take advantage of. Upon their meeting, Scott Summers immediately fell for the clone, Madelyn whom he married and had a child with. However, life had not been kind to baby Nathan and Madelyn after Jean Grey was discovered to be alive.
Scott left her and their son to be reunited with Jean. Things went spiraling down for mother and son after that.
Nathan was later taken by the Askani Clan, who came from 2000 years into the future ruled by Apocalypse. The Askani Clan informed Scott Summers that his child would be their savior.
Apart from being thrown into a cacophony of time travel, viruses, various mutant affiliations and the Civil War, Cable was also of note due to his expansive power set. His abilities included telepathic illusion, telepathic cloak, mind link and mind control among others.
In Marvel comic book canon, Cable is usually paired with the Merc with a Mouth nutcase, Deadpool, a dynamic which 20th Century Fox would want translated on film.
Recent announcements regarding “Deadpool 2” included the casting “Atlanta” star, Zasie Beetz as the mutant Domino and Tim Miller’s apparent exit from production.
