On Charting His Own Path and Making It: Mr. Adrian Roi Adorio
Funny how things turn out different than what we initially planned.
While this generation’s mantra is “Follow your passion(s)”, more often than not, we thrive even in the things we do not see ourselves in to begin with. Life is tricky like that. But at times, it plays you like a stringed instrument to produce pleasant tunes.
Nobody knows this better than Mr. Adrain Roi Adorio.
Simply referred to as Roi by his peers, he creates 3D weapons and armors for the much-anticipated Secret Six game, Project Xandata.
This wasn’t his original plan of course. Being a lover of animals, he tells the site that he actually intended to be a veterinarian. Funny. Maybe it was RAN online that he fondly played way back. Maybe the universe had things planned—if you are one to believe in such things. Or maybe, Roi and the Game Development just clicked. Regardless of the reason, we are wholly grateful that he chose the path he is in. Have you seen his works? You should.
Xeno Creatives is more than fortunate to have an opportunity to sit with Mr. Adorio as he recounts his journey to becoming a Game Developer and his dreams and goals moving forward.
Xeno Creatives (XC): How did you get involved in Game Development? Did you ever like say to yourself when you were younger, “When I grow up, I want to create video games!” Was it ever a thing for kids back then—creating games instead of just playing them?
Adrian Roi Adorio (ARA): No. Initially, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian because I really loved animals as a kid. I even had different kinds of pets back then.
XC: Was there ever a video game that had you like, “Now THIS is why I want to make games!”? What was it? What makes it so inspiring for you?
ARA: Perhaps the closest video game that I can say is RAN online. I would always get excited to play it when I was younger, and I was really amazed with its graphics (back then 😝) so I think its game art left a huge impression on me.
XC: What did you have to go through to become a Game Developer? What was it like getting immersed in the culture?
ARA: The earliest obstacle I went through was when I received the result for my college entrance exam. I failed my first choice (BS IT-GDD), but got accepted at my second option (BS-IS). However, the chairperson of GDD interviewed me and asked whether I still wanted to pursue the course or not because given the entrance exam grade I got, I might find the course more challenging. I was determined then so I said yes. Luckily, I survived the course; I even got high grades in some of my classes, honors and bagged some awards for our thesis. By slowly getting immersed in the culture as early as college was honestly very fulfilling and fun.
XC: We understand that you have been involved in Secret Six’s “Project Xandata” since its inception, what was your role there as a Game Developer exactly? Could you describe how your day looks like in such a production?
ARA: I’m assigned to create 3D weapons and armors. For me, it’s really just like a normal day because I do enjoy what I’m doing despite still having to deal with stress, deadlines, and crunch times. It’s really nice too because I continue to learn and grow while being part of this production.
XC: What do you think is your edge? What do you think makes you stand out from the rest?
ARA: We are all different. As of now, I cannot say that there is something that makes me stand out from the rest. I just have my own goals and personal target. And as long as I stay focused on them, I know everything will follow. I don’t just work hard; I also work smart.
XC: So far, what were the challenges that you had encountered working in the Game Development industry?
ARA: There are a lot of schedules, conflicts, revisions, and such. We experience problems and headaches. However, at the end of the day, they’re all a good kind of challenge.
XC: As far as the industry is concerned, what do you want to be known for?
ARA: I don’t want to be an artist who is only seeking to be the best. I strive to become an artist that influences and inspires a lot of people.
XC: If you weren’t a Game Developer today, what could you see yourself working as?
ARA: I really see myself as a businessman. Even now, I have a business related to my career so yeah, I would have been an entrepreneur or whatnot if I had not pursued this profession.
