Boone’s “New Mutants” Brings Darkness to the X-Men Franchise
by Joshua Diokno
Director Josh Boone’s X-Men spin-off, New Mutants will take on a dark, horror movie-worthy tone as the director said so himself. Just recently, visual evidence of the claim seem to validate it. You may see the image of the bloody clapper from the director’s instagram below:
In an interview, Boone took the claim further by stating that this side of the X-Men universe will feel like . . .Stephen King meets John Hughes, While the director is silent about the full details to the spin-off, news around the grapevine has it that it might allude to New Mutants # 18, given the director’s statement. This saw Bill Sienkiewicz’s art which Boone himself is a fan of.
In comic book narrative, the New Mutants were a group youngsters with mutant abilities who are too young to be a part of the X-Men but mature enough to start understanding and forging their gifts.
As everything is still under wraps, the description for the movie only tells of five mutants who are held in a secret facility against their own will. It is here that they “battle” the threats that their own powers bring.
Boone’s New Mutants hits theatres on April 13th 2018. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Blu Hunt, Charlie Heaton, and Henry Zaga.
